Distracted Walking Dangers

We have all heard just how dangerous texting and driving is. Often shown on billboards and commercials, it is no secret that the risks associated with texting and driving (or any type of distracted driving, for that matter) are extremely dangerous. But what about cellphone usage while walking? All too often, we see pedestrians using their cellphones while walking. Whether it’s texting, talking on the phone, scrolling through social media, or checking emails, it is important to realize that being distracted while walking is also extremely dangerous.

In fact, many distracted pedestrians end up getting injured due to using their cellphones while walking when their attention should be on what’s around them. Unfortunately, the consequences in a distracted walking accident can be very serious as well.

In this blog, we will discuss the dangers of distracted walking, as well as the importance of staying alert at all times.

Who is a Distracted Walker?

A distracted walker is anyone whose attention is diverted while walking on the street. It can range from being on your phone, listening to music, or even reading a book. There is certainly no shortage of variations of distracted walking. So, if you are taking your eyes off the road or even your mind off of what you’re doing while walking, it can slow your reaction time, making it more difficult to notice any dangers in your path and surroundings.

Many times, people fail to realize the dangers associated with distracted walking. In the event of an accident, distracted walking may even reduce your amount of compensation if you file a claim. With that being said, always be sure to keep your eyes on what’s in front and around you to avoid any accidents.

How to Minimize Risks

Distracted walking incidents are unfortunately on the rise. It is important that you do your part as a pedestrian to minimize such risks. If you need to use your phone, be sure to step aside into a safe area on the sidewalk and move out of the way of other pedestrians. Do not use your phone while crossing the street. In addition, you should avoid walking with headphones in your ears so you are able to always be alert of sounds in your surroundings. Lastly, be aware of your surroundings at all times. When you are alert, you are able to react quickly and avoid any hazards as much as possible.
