Are pit bulls really more dangerous than other dogs?

On Behalf of | Jan 4, 2022 | Dog Bite Injury |

Anytime that you bring up dog attacks, people will mention that pit bulls are responsible for a lot of serious attacks, and they will talk about how dangerous this breed is. There are plenty of people who refuse to own pit bulls and who feel nervous whenever they’re around them.

On the other hand, there are also people who believe that dogs are not inherently more dangerous based on breed. It’s all about how the dog is raised. They believe that pit bulls can be loyal and loving pets if they’re raised properly and that the dangerous ones are simply those who have been raised in an environment that creates that level of aggression.

What do the statistics tell us?

The statistics do paint a fairly difficult picture for pit bull owners. Whether you are ranking things by the total number of attacks or the number of fatalities, pit bulls always seem to come out at the top of the list. If you just look at the numbers, it does appear that they are the most dangerous breed.

However, those who report these statistics do note that pit bulls are often abused or deliberately bred for aggression. This does play into the reason that they show up so prominently in these statistics.

Their size and strength also play a role. Smaller dogs may not cause serious harm or death when they attack, and their bites may be minor enough that people don’t even report it. With a pit bull, injuries are typically severe and these reports are made more often. This could skew the statistics to some degree.

What can you do if you get attacked?

If you get attacked by any breed and you suffer serious injuries, you need to know how to seek financial compensation. This can help to cover things like medical bills and lost wages.
