You’re a safe driver, to be sure. You obey the speed limit, watch the traffic around you and you don’t take chances with your safety or the safety of others.
But that doesn’t mean you won’t end up in a wreck someday. California has some very dangerous roads, and you may be driving on them more often than you realize.
What roads in Cali are the most deadly for drivers? A study of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicates that these are the highways with the highest number of fatalities in recent years:
- I-5: This road directly connects Orange and Los Angeles counties, and is heavily congested — which often leads to serious wrecks. In the last fiscal year of the study, there were a total of 192 deaths on this road alone.
- US-101: This winding road has plenty of gorgeous coastal views — and plenty of crashes by drivers who may be distracted, particularly during commuter hours. There were 139 fatal accidents on this road in a single year.
- SR-99: The Golden State Highway connects many rural communities to the valley, but those dark rural areas of the road can be treacherous. A total of 110 people lost their lives in accidents on this road in the last year of the study.
What does this mean for you? Essentially, it’s just a reminder that danger is everywhere. If you’re on the road, you can’t totally avoid it, no matter how safety-conscious you may personally be. If you’re injured in a wreck, make sure that you understand your right to compensation for your losses. Help with your claim is always available.
