Truck driver's mistake cost 2 people their lives in Baker

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating an accident near Baker that happened along I-15 South in the early evening of July 30, 2020. The wreck claimed two lives.

According to reports, a 39-year-old Cleveland, Ohio, native had a flat on his 2002 Chevy and was stranded at the side of the road with his passengers. A 43-year-old tow truck operator was in the process of providing assistance when a 2013 Freightliner hauling two bottom-dump trailers somehow slid out of its lane and onto the shoulder of the road.

The Freightliner hit the tow truck, causing it to roll over both the tow truck driver and the stranded motorist, killing them.

While neither drugs nor alcohol seems to be involved, the police have characterized the 23-year-old trucker's actions on the road as "unsafe" and are still trying to determine what he was doing when the wreck occurred.

Accidents like these are a reminder that right now, America is suffering a major shortage of truck drivers. That means that younger, less-experienced drivers may often be put into service on long hauls and handling big rigs without enough training or practical knowledge to be safe. In addition, it's always perilous to be on the side of the road when vehicles are passing by. Whether you're merely a stranded driver or a professional whose job requires you to work alongside speeding cars and trucks, the danger of a wreck is immense.

When someone is killed in a wreck involving a motor vehicle of any kind, their survivors may be entitled to compensation through a wrongful death claim. While that will never restore a loved one's life, it can provide families with the money they need to handle the deceased's funeral expenses. A financial settlement may also help them to obtain a measure of financial stability as they try to move forward. If your loved one was killed in a wreck, find out more about wrongful death claims.
