A helmet may save your life

Motorcyclists are at a primary risk for many types of injuries when they're struck by a vehicle. These range from things like road rash that are troublesome but not life threatening up to injuries like those to the brain that can be fatal.

One of the most effective ways that you can protect your brain is to wear a helmet. Unfortunately, not everyone does this when they ride. In California, it is illegal to ride a motorcycle without a helmet for passengers and drivers. It is also illegal for a passenger to ride with an un-helmeted driver.

Wearing a helmet can save your life

Helmets that are approved by the Department of Transportation are designed to protect the head and neck if the person is thrown off the bike. You should ensure that the one you choose has the approval sticker or mark on it. Helmets that are Snell-approved will have a higher impact rating than those that aren't, so you may consider looking for this as well.

It must be properly fitted in order to be effective. It should be snug but not so tight that it gives you a headache. It must fit level on the head and around your jaw. You must ensure that your helmet isn't involved in a crash. If you do crash, check it for signs of defects. Typically, it's best to just replace it since there might be a weakness that you can't see.

Wearing a helmet that fits properly can reduce the severity of a head injury by up to 70%. This could mean the difference between life and death. It could also mean that if you do suffer a brain injury, it isn't going to be life altering if you're wearing a helmet.

When a crash occurs

Motorcyclists who are struck by another vehicle will likely need medical care. In some cases, the results may be catastrophic. If you're in this position and the other driver's negligence led to the crash, you might consider seeking compensation for the damages that you're dealing with. This includes the cost of the medical care you receive. If you're unable to return to work in the same capacity as you were working prior to the wreck, it may also include lost wages. You need to look at the future costs as well as the pasts costs of the crash so that you can seek all the damages you're due.
