Wear the right gear to help protect yourself in a crash

When you ride your motorcycle, you know that you have to be more cautious than others. You are aware that you don't have much protection if you get into a crash, and that could mean that you get seriously injured if you are thrown from your motorcycle or impact another object or vehicle.

One of the things that you can do to protect yourself is to get the right kind of riding gear. By wearing the right forms of protective gear, you'll be much safer in the case that an accident does occur.

What kind of gear is most important for a motorcyclist?

From a practical standpoint, the most important piece of gear is your helmet. It protects your neck and head, and it's easy to put on. It takes just a few seconds to snap your helmet on, and then you're ready to ride.

Helmets reduce the risk of death in an accident by 42%. If that's not a good enough reason to use one, remember that just wearing your helmet can reduce the risk of a head injury by 69%. Since head injuries are a leading cause of disability and death, it's most important to protect your head first.

Next, you can move on to the other areas that need protection. For instance, your feet. You should never wear flip flops or sandals when you ride. If you need to have high heels or sandals for work or a special occasion, pack them and bring them with you. Wear riding boots or thick shoes to protect your feet. You should also wear pants and a long-sleeve shirt at the very least. Padded motorcycle attire is also available.

Of course, if you can add on gloves or other kinds of specially designed body armor, those pieces could be helpful to you, too.

When a motorcycle crash does occur, you want to know what to do. There are riding courses that teach you how to lay down your motorcycle and how to protect yourself if you crash. Though you may not always be able to do so, having that small amount of additional knowledge could be beneficial when you're in an emergency situation.

If you are impacted, remember that the other driver who hit you may be able to be held responsible. If their mistakes led to you suffering an injury, it is only fair that they are held accountable for their actions.
