Safety tips when you're driving in springtime

Spring is a beautiful time of year -- but it can also present some unique hazards for the nation's drivers. If you're about to get behind the wheel to run errands or take a drive, make sure that you take note of the following:

1. The wet weather

April showers may or may not bring May flowers, but they often drop so much water so quickly that it can cause roads to become partially flooded. Hydroplaning, where your vehicle's tires lose contact with the road due to the amount of water on the ground, can be an issue.

Check the weather before you head out so that you aren't trying to drive in a storm. During any kind of rain, it's prudent to slow down and give other vehicles plenty of space. If the rain is really coming down, pull over and wait it out before heading back on the road.

2. Pedestrians and cyclists

At some point in the day, everyone's a pedestrian -- but spring tends to bring out a lot of walkers and cyclists all at once. Not all of them will do their part to stay safe and prevent accidents.

Put extra effort into staying focused on the road ahead and remember to scan constantly for walkers and bikers, especially at intersections. This is not the time to be distracted.

3. Potholes and road construction

If you feel like the first sign of spring is the emergence of potholes everywhere you go, you probably aren't wrong. Winter weather is tough on the roads. Come spring, potholes can pose a big danger to drivers. If you hit one wrong, you could bounce into the path of an oncoming vehicle, so slow down and approach any you see carefully.

You also need to be cautious of construction crews making road repairs. Again, it's better to slow down than to get into a wreck.

Despite your best precautions, you can't rule out the possibility of an accident. Another driver may not take safety as seriously as you. If you're injured due to another driver's negligence, find out how you can get compensation for your losses.
