Drivers often run 'unwarranted' stop signs

The government takes great care to make sure that their decisions regarding traffic controls are warranted. They understand that these controls, when used in places where they are not needed, can really inconvenience drivers. The goal is to make the road systems as simple and efficient as possible, while still keeping people safe. It can sometimes be hard to find a balance.

When they don't, though, it results in all sorts of issues. For instance, regarding stop signs used in unwarranted areas, officials found that people often violated them -- they ran the stop signs. They did not want the inconvenience of having to stop when it felt clear to them that they should not have to do so.

Of course, the flip side of that mentality is that drivers start making judgment calls. They decide, on the fly, if the sign makes sense or not. If they determine that it is unneeded, they run it. Now, they may be right 99 times out of 100, but what about the other time? What about the driver who looks, doesn't see any cross traffic and then runs the sign right in front of a vehicle that they simply overlooked?

It's not good to have drivers making decisions about what traffic controls they'll follow. People are not perfect, and they make serious mistakes, especially under pressure. They need to obey all traffic controls, even if they don't feel like they're needed or that they make sense.

If a driver fails to do so and causes an accident that puts you in the hospital, you may be able to seek financial compensation.
