Los Angeles sheriff's detective dies in auto-pedestrian crash

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is mourning the loss of one of its own who died from injuries when she was struck by a car while off duty.

The 41-year-old detective was stopped at a red light when she saw an elderly woman fall to the ground while in a crosswalk in the community of Valley Village. The detective put her car in park, safely exited her vehicle and helped the woman across the street.

As the detective returned to her car, she was hit by another vehicle. She was transported to a local hospital, where she died.

The driver of the car that hit the detective stopped and tried to assist her. The accident is under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.

The detective "was an outstanding detective who would lead by example, and she definitely led by example through her act of kindness," the sheriff said at a news conference.

She had worked in stations throughout the county, handling everything from domestic violence cases to working as a school resource officer. She was assigned to the West Hollywood station at the time of her death.

She is survived by two sons, ages 20 and 17, and her parents. The 20-year-old serves in the U.S. Navy.

One of her children told KTLA-TV Channel 5 that he was proud of his mom.

"What she did, it was heroic for her to go out that way," he said. "I love her for that. She's always had a kind heart."

Her youngest child, in particular, will need financial assistance as he approaches adulthood. His guardians might want to explore legal options on his behalf.
