How serious of a factor is sleep apnea for truck drivers?

While many individuals who cohabitate with someone who has sleep apnea (SA) often complain about that person's snoring, this disorder is far more serious than it appears on the surface. This condition affects an individual's ability to breathe while sleeping. An individual may not enjoy restful sleep and thus wake up more fatigued than others if they suffer from SA. Data compiled by Freight Waves (FW) shows that some 35% of truckers have been diagnosed with sleep apnea. This is a very scary statistic.

FW's data shows that Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is most common among truckers. This condition makes tractor-trailer operators feel less alert than they otherwise would if they didn't have OSA. Individuals with this type of SA receive less oxygen flow to their brains. This affects both their mood and alertness. Heart disease and hypertension are also common among individuals with OSA.

Statistics compiled by FW show that the sleep fragmentation that individuals with OSA endure is so severe that it increases a trucker's risk of becoming involved in a fatigue-induced crash by 250% over those who haven't been diagnosed with the same condition.

One of the best things that an individual who has been diagnosed with SA can do to cure themselves of this condition is to lose weight. Since individuals drop pounds from the top of their body on down, a reduction in snoring and other SA symptoms will be noticeable early on as the weight comes off a trucker's face, neck and chest. Tractor-trailer operators will also notice that their mood improves and that they feel more rested after sleeping as well.

Driver fatigue is one of the primary reasons that serious automobile crashes happen. Collisions that occur because a motorist fell asleep often have catastrophic results. An attorney can help you recover compensation for your injuries if you've been hurt here in Manhattan Beach due to a California tractor-trailer operator's negligence.
