What are ways to avoid becoming involved in a truck crash?

On Behalf of | Dec 6, 2019 | Truck Accidents |

Some of the most serious types of motor vehicle accidents are those that involve tractor-trailers and cars. These are the types of crashes that often result in motorists suffering the most serious types of injuries or being killed. There are things that motorists can do to minimize their risk of becoming involved in a truck accident though.

Motorists should always be mindful to give truckers space. This is something that drivers should do when they’re pulling in front, riding behind or alongside trucks. The reason that it’s so important for motorists to give truckers space has a lot to do with braking.

Tractor-trailers weigh significantly more than automobiles no matter whether they’re full or not. While many passenger car drivers can rely on their vehicles to come to a full stop in mere seconds, truckers cannot count on their tractor-trailers to do the same. This is often why truck accidents prove to be so catastrophic, especially if a motorist is struck from the rear.

If a motorist is looking to pull in front of a truck, then the driver must give at least several car lengths’ distance before doing so. This will allow any trucker that is riding behind you to slow down or come to a stop if they need to. This may prevent the tractor-trailer operator from striking you.

One way that you can tell if you’ve traveled far enough ahead to pull in front of a semitruck is to look in your rearview mirror. If you can see both of the truck’s headlights in it, then you’re probably an adequate distance ahead to safely pull in front of them.

You should also be mindful of blind spots when driving alongside 18-wheelers. If your car is positioned alongside the front 20-feet of the truck, then it’s unlikely that the trucker can see you. This is why you mustn’t slow down when attempting to pass a semitruck. It’s also critical that you remain vigilant in case the trucker appears to be making plans to change lanes while you’re alongside them.

Ride-under and rear-end crashes are common accidents that automobile drivers and truckers find themselves involved in here in California. These are both preventable crashes though. An attorney in Manhattan Beach can advise you of your right to file suit if you or a loved one have been seriously hurt in a crash.
