Pedestrian killed in Bay Area bus crash

Los Angeles, San Francisco and other cities in California are not particularly noted as havens for walkers and hikers beyond certain scenic districts. The Golden State has a big car culture, which is only recently changing to accept more pedestrian and mass transit options as priorities and realities change to require them.

But even a bigger reliance on mass transit can pose hazards. A public bus was part of an accident in Redwood City which claimed the life of a 70-year-old woman on a recent morning. The crash happened directly next to a high school.

"We get a ton of congestion from parents picking up kids and there's no left-hand turn signal which is badly needed," said one local resident near the site of the fatal accident. Other locals have reported close calls at the intersection, where James Avenue meets El Camino Real.

No injuries were reported to the driver or the four people on-board the bus. The accident is still being investigated, and there have not yet been any reports of criminal charges against the driver or the bus' operator.

"I would say to the district, '[the operator] find a different way to merge into the mainstream traffic, it's just a hard place to maneuver especially during rush hour,'" said another regional resident.

Although money can never make up for a lost life or even a serious injury, civil damages after a pedestrian has been hit by a vehicle can help with recovery or related expenses. An attorney can help plan a case for civil court and represent the interests of victims or their survivors.
