How to safely drive your motorcycle in a city setting

The way you operate your motorcycle depends largely on the road conditions, which includes but is not limited to the type of roadway and traffic around you.

If you attempt to drive your motorcycle the same in the city as you do on the highway, you could make a mistake that causes an accident.

There are several tips you can follow to enhance your safety when driving in a city setting, including the following:

  • Keep your head on a swivel: City riding is fast-paced, so it's critical to keep your head on a swivel, thus allowing you to scan everything that's happening around you. From the car in front of yours to the pedestrians crossing the street, the more you see the safer you'll be.
  • Make yourself visible: You can't force other drivers to notice you, but there are steps you can take to increase your visibility, such as avoiding blind spots.
  • Take special caution when approaching intersections: Many motorcycle accidents in a city setting happen at intersections, such as the result of another driver neglecting to stop at a red light. Slow down, look both ways and have an idea of what you'll do if you see danger ahead.
  • Watch for pedestrians: With city driving, pedestrians are every bit as dangerous as other drivers. For example, if someone darts in front of your motorcycle, you may have to swerve to avoid them, which could cause an accident.
  • Adjust to changing traffic and weather conditions: Conditions have a way of changing without notice, so prepare yourself for everything. What will you do if traffic suddenly becomes heavy? What will you do if an unexpected rainstorm hits?

Even if you make it a point to drive safely, it doesn't mean that you're immune to a motorcycle-car accident. You never know if another driver will become distracted, ignore a traffic signal or get the urge to speed.

If you're injured in a motorcycle accident, move to safety and call 911 for help. After treatment and a discussion with your doctor about what comes next, you can file an insurance claim, learn more about the accident and take steps to obtain compensation for your injuries and all other damages pertaining to the crash.
