Are traumatic brain injuries something to be concerned about?

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the most serious medical conditions that can result from an incident such as an assault, contact sports incident or a motorcycle, truck or car crash. This type of injury is quite common too. Most individuals who are diagnosed with TBIs only suffer mild concussions. They can recover from these with little medical intervention in a matter of weeks. Others are left with more life-threatening or altering injuries that result in surgery and a lifetime of challenges.

The symptoms that individual experiences after suffering a TBI are often the same no matter how mild or severe their injury is. A person may initially lose consciousness in the immediate aftermath of an injuring incident. That individual may feel disoriented or confused, fatigued and suffer memory lapses once they come to.

An individual who has suffered a TBI may have difficulty sleeping, concentrating or problems seeing as time wears on. Persistent irritability, depression, seizures, dizziness, vomiting and headaches may all be signs that something is seriously wrong.

Emergency physicians will generally review a patient's medical history and perform a battery of physical tests to assess how acute a patient's injury is. If those results prove inconclusive, then a doctor may subject a patient to a computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. This will allow your physician to better see what's going on inside of their skull.

A doctor may have to operate in some of the most severe TBI cases. This is especially the case if there is a severed blood vessel, a skull fracture, swelling of the brain or sizable blood clots.

The type of treatment that a patient receives immediately after suffering a TBI is important. An individual's prognosis is conditioned upon the type of rehabilitative care that they receive as well. This is why you should consult with a serious and fatal injuries attorney early on in your loved one's treatment. Your Manhattan Beach lawyer can advise you of the many different avenues for pursuing compensation in your loved one's California injury case.
