Protect yourself against common causes of motorcycle accidents

As a motorcyclist, it's imperative that your safety always comes first. There's never a good time to take a risk on the road, as doing so increases the likelihood of an accident.

Understanding the common causes of motorcycle accidents can help keep you safe. While you can't protect against drivers making bad decisions, you can at least anticipate this in an attempt to avoid trouble.

Here are some of the most common causes of motorcycle accidents:

  • Left turn in front of you: As you approach an intersection, a motor vehicle traveling from the opposite direction may attempt to make a left turn. If they don't leave enough space, you may find it impossible to slow down before striking it.
  • Rear-end accident: This most often occurs when you're stopped at a red light, yield sign or stop sign. If the car behind you doesn't see you stopped, it's possible they could hit you from behind. This is one of the most serious motorcycle accidents, as you're not likely to see the vehicle coming.
  • A car changes lanes into you: Since your motorcycle is smaller than other vehicles on the road, drivers may lose sight of where you are. This increases the chance of a driver changing lanes into you, thus knocking you off your bike. You can protect against this by avoiding blind spots.
  • Open car door: This is most common in urban settings where vehicles are parked along the side of the road. If a driver or passenger opens a door into your lane of travel, you only have two options: Swerve out of the way or hit it head on. If you don't have the time to move, you're likely to strike the door.

If you're injured in any type of motorcycle accident, stay where you are and administer first aid to your injuries until help arrives.

Once you receive treatment, contact your insurance company and collect evidence showing that the other driver was at fault. This will position you to receive compensation for your injuries and other damages, such as those to your motorcycle.
