Make Memorial Day memorable for the right reasons -- not crashes

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start to summer, and with it comes greater dangers on the roads in California and throughout the United States.

The National Safety Council (NSC) estimates there will be 380 fatalities during Memorial Day weekend this year -- the first time it has predicted fewer than 400 deaths in four years.

"Although we are experiencing a plateau in fatality trends, we are still losing an unacceptable number of people on our roadways, and this holiday may be no different," said the council's manager of statistics. "If we pay attention, slow down and be courteous, we can increase our chances of making it to picnics, beaches and barbecues rather than emergency rooms."

In addition, more than 43,000 are projected to suffer serious injuries during the long weekend.

The summer holidays – Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day – traditionally see an average of more than 110 accident-related deaths each day, according to the organization.

The NSC recommends people follow these tips to decrease their chance of accidents:

  • Drive defensively
  • Drive sober
  • If you have teen drivers in your household, remind them of all the rules and monitor their driving habits
  • Make sure you know how to use your car's safety features
  • Repair any open recalls before traveling; You can check to see if your car has any by visiting ChecktoProtect.org

Memorial Day can be a fun family weekend, and no matter how much care you take, the driver ahead of you or behind you might not be as careful. If you are injured in an accident on the holiday – or any time of year – an attorney can inform you of your options to recoup your losses.
