Reflective gear essential for cyclists, pedestrians at night

Maybe you're someone who likes to take a jog near the beach after work. Or, maybe you commute to your job by bike or just like to take an after-dinner walk.

Even though the days are longer this time of year, you still need to take every precaution possible to stay safe as a pedestrian or bicyclist so that drivers see you while you're on the roads at dusk or dark. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 76 percent of fatal pedestrian accidents occur at dusk or in the dark.

While bright, neon colors help you stand out in the day, reflective gear is essential at night, however. (It's always a good idea in the daytime, too!)

Remember that drivers of oncoming cars might be looking ahead to the next traffic light or watching something else on the road and might not see you if you aren't prepared. Here's what you should have in your closet for safety as a pedestrian or a bicyclist:

  • Reflective shoes or shoe covers
  • Reflective ankle bands and headbands
  • Reflective bike helmets or a reflective cover for your current helmet
  • Reflective T-shirts or vests
  • Reflective tape on arms or legs, which is especially effective when combined with the reflective clothing

If your budget doesn't allow an investment in these items, put reflective stickers on your shoes and clothing to provide some protection.

Outdoor exercise is important but must be done safely. Unfortunately, you can take every precaution possible and still wind up being hit by a car and injured. If you are the victim of a negligent driver, an experienced attorney can help you to recoup your medical expenses and other losses.
