Man sentenced to 22 years in deaths of 3 Californians

A Whittier, California, man has been sentenced to more than 22 years prison for his part in the deaths of three people in a crash three years ago.

The fatal crash occurred in February 2016 when the 38-year-old driver was racing along Interstate 5 in Commerce, near Triggs Street.

Four people also were injured.

The man was behind the wheel of a Dodge Challenger and was racing the driver of a Dodge Charger just after midnight. The Challenger driver lost control of his car and hit a United Parcel Service truck. The impact sent the delivery truck into the center median, and from there, it flew into the air.

When it landed, it hit a Nissan sedan carrying two teenage students from the College of the Canyons who were returning from a fun day spent at Disneyland. The UPS truck then caught fire, a Honda Civic plowed into it and debris flew into cars on the other side of I-5.

The Challenger driver had been charged with murder in 2016, but he agreed to plead guilty to three counts of vehicular manslaughter, 11 counts of assault likely to cause great bodily injury and four counts of taking part in a vehicle speed contest.

The families of the victims, as well as those injured, must feel a sense of closure now that the driver has entered his plea and sentenced to prison. Still, the families of the victims have suffered a great emotional loss, and they and the injured undoubtedly suffered financial harm because of the negligence of this man. An attorney experienced in personal injury cases can help the survivors of a car crash.
