2 elderly California women die after auto-pedestrian crash

A tragic crash that killed two 72-year-old women should serve as a reminder to all California drivers: Now that spring and better weather have arrived, we all need to be aware of more pedestrians out on the road, taking a walk and enjoying the fresh air.

The two women were walking on the shoulder of a road in the Northern California community of Carmichael when they were struck by a car at approximately 9:30 a.m. one recent morning. Police said the car that hit them was driven by a 16-year-old girl who swerved to the right of the road and hit the pedestrians.

Both women were transported to the hospital with major injuries, and one was pronounced dead the same day. The other woman succumbed to her injuries the following day, according to the California Highway Patrol.

In a news release, the CHP said that the part of Arden Way on which they were walking doesn't have sidewalks.

Police said the investigation is ongoing but that the teenaged driver has cooperated and stayed on the scene of the crash. Drugs and alcohol did not appear to be involved.

Distracted driving was not immediately ruled out, however. With the increase in the number of pedestrians on the streets now, it is a good time to remind the young drivers in our households about the need to stay vigilant and alert while driving.

Also, we also need to caution our children to be careful while walking this spring and summer and to stay off their electronic devices and on the lookout for cars. We want our loved ones to stay safe and avoid unanticipated injuries.
