Teen killed in Thanksgiving morning accident on Interstate 405

| Nov 23, 2018 | Serious And Fatal Injuries |

A San Diego teenager was killed early Thanksgiving morning when the car he was riding in was hit by a truck.

The 17-year-old boy was among four people traveling in a Fiat 500 about 2 a.m. on Interstate 405 in Costa Mesa, California, according to the California Highway Patrol, authorities said. The car was traveling southbound near the Harbor Boulevard exit.

The Fiat 500 was driven by an 18-year-old man and it crashed into another car that was disabled on the freeway after being in another crash.

“(The driver) was unable to stop in time and the front of the Fiat collided with the stalled vehicle,” according to a statement from the California Highway Patrol. The driver of the Fiat was ejected from the car and suffered major injuries.

The car had three passengers: two 18-year-old men and the 17-year-old. One 18-year-old exited the car and walked safely to the shoulder. The two others were in the car when a Freightliner driven by a 63-year-old man struck the disabled Fiat. The lighting system on the Fiat did not work after the crash.

“(The big rig driver) was unable to avoid the blacked-out Fiat that was stalled in the No. 5 lane, directly in front of him, and the front of the Freightliner collided with the front of the Fiat,” the statement said.

The 17-year-old was pronounced dead at the site of the accident. The 18-year-old passenger who remained in the Fiat was taken to the hospital with major injuries.

This was a tragic event, on a holiday, that will impact every family involved. It will take some time for investigators to sort out just who is responsible for the chain of events that occurred, but that shouldn’t stop injured victims and survivors of the boy who was killed from seeking advice from a qualified California attorney.
