Know the dangers while on your motorcycle

California is a beautiful state to tour on a motorcycle. When you decide that you are ready to head out on your adventure, ensure that you are fully ready for the trip. Most bikers know that safety has to remain a priority, so be sure you are thinking about this while you are preparing and on your journey.

One of the most important things you must do to remain safe is to wear your helmet each time you ride. Not only does doing this protect your head and brain, it also ensures you are in compliance with the law. This state has a mandatory helmet law for anyone riding on a motorcycle, regardless of age.

Types of hazards motorcyclists face

There are many hazards you face while you are on the road. Some of these fall on you, including your familiarity with the motorcycle and your riding skills. Others fall on the manufacturer, including defects in the bike that may lead to instability and wobble accidents. Some are the fault of other drivers, such as failing to yield the right of way to you. There are some that might not be the fault of any one party. These are things like road hazards that are more dangerous for motorcyclists than other vehicles.

Risks of these hazards

Fatal car accidents for vehicles not including motorcycles have declined in the years since 1999. Unfortunately, fatal motorcycle accidents have more than doubled during that same time frame. This should be a wake up call for all drivers to pay attention when they are out riding.

Motorcyclists are injured and die at higher rates than passengers of other types of vehicles. They are five times as likely to suffer injuries and 26 times as likely to succumb to injuries that occur in a motorcycle wreck. Part of the reason for this is that other drivers just don't watch for motorcycles. In two-thirds of accidents that involve a motorcycle and another vehicle, the driver of that other automobile didn't give the motorcyclist the right of way that was due to them.

If you are injured in a wreck while on your motorcycle, reviewing the circumstances to determine who is at fault is in order. If someone else was negligent, you might choose to seek compensation from that party. A successful claim can cover medical bills and other expenses related to the crash.
