The extreme risk of drowsy drivers takes many forms

Drowsy drivers pose a risk on many levels. The most obvious, of course, is that they could nod off behind the wheel and cause an accident. This often happens when people try to drive long after they are too tired to do so. Even if someone does not completely fall asleep behind the wheel, they may still have slower reactions and make simple mistakes, similar to a drunk driver.

But does it go even farther? The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) certainly thinks that it does.

According to the NSF, America is in the midst of a sleepiness epidemic. People are tired all the time. They try to do too much and they are overworked. Is it any surprise that we drink so much coffee as a nation?

In any case, the NSF says that this epidemic contributes heavily to how often people experience road rage. When they are too tired, they feel annoyed and irritable. They resent other drivers. They are quick to get angry over even the most minor inconveniences.

This could be why you see people engage in road rage, for instance, after simply getting cut off. Is having to hit the brakes for a half a second really worth getting angry about? And yet, people do it all the time. They yell at each other, drive aggressively, cause car accidents and even get into physical altercations at stoplights.

Could the real reason just be that they're not getting eight hours of sleep every night, so they are constantly on edge? It certainly appears to be at least a contributing factor.

If you get involved in an accident with a tired, aggressive driver, you need to know all of the legal options you have.
