Los Angeles kayaker killed in accident with boat

A Los Angeles city official was killed recently while kayaking.

The 46-year-old woman was a resident of Marina del Rey, California. She was out on her kayak on Labor Day and was struck by a 50-foot boat near the south jetty.

Officials with the coroner's office said she died of multiple traumatic injuries and the incident was believed to be an accident. As such, the boaters were not cited and they haven't been charged with a crime.

Aboard the boat were two people in their 60s, according to the sheriff's department. Deputies said the boaters didn't recognize that they had hit the kayak, but another boat stopped them. The boaters called 911.

In the immediate aftermath of the accident, investigators did not believe the boat was traveling faster than the 5-mph speed limit in the no-wake zone where the boat hit the kayak. They also did not suspect drugs or alcohol to be a factor.

The woman was the chief of staff and public information officer for the Los Angeles Department on Disability.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti issued a statement that said the city was "deeply saddened" by the woman's death.

"She will be remembered as a beloved colleague and friend, and an advocate for the community she served with passion as Chief of Staff for the Department on Disability," Garcetti continued. He said the woman "dedicated herself to making Los Angeles more accessible and equitable, and my thoughts are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time."

Even if criminal charges aren't filed in the case, the woman's family might choose to speak with an attorney who works with wrongful death cases. An attorney could evaluate the facts and determine if, perhaps, there are grounds for a civil suit. The woman could have had children or others counting on her for financial support.
