Humans contribute to self-driving car accidents in California

Someday, self-driving cars will dominate the freeways in Southern California. That doesn't mean we can drive without fear of an accident.

In a study of accident reports in California, the news site Axios said that people – not technology -- were responsible for most of the accidents involving self-driving cars.

The study, which looked at reports from 2014 to 2018, found that in 37 of the 38 cases when cars were in the autonomous mode and operating on their own, the accidents were attributed to human error.

Diving further into the study, Axios found that 24 accidents occurred when the auto mode was on and the car was stopped. The self-driving technology didn't cause any of the accidents.

Additionally, when the cars were in the mode that allowed for human interaction, there were 19 accidents – six of them caused by the technology.

In three of the accident reports, people were cited as the cause because they climbed on the self-driving cars or attacked them.

The study offers an important look at what we can expect in the future. It foreshadows largely safer roads, but it doesn't tell us that we will never have an accident.

Southern California is progressive when it comes to transportation. In fact, there are 55 companies with self-driving car testing permits in the state. It won't be a surprise to see a great volume of self-driving cars on the roads.

Still, we will need to be alert to cars and the potential for crashes, just as we are now. Serious injuries will continue to happen, no matter if the driver is human or the car is automated. If you are in an accident of any type, it would be worthwhile to consult a California attorney with experience in such cases.
