The risks you face as a motorcycle rider

It can be great fun to drive a motorcycle, as there are few better feelings than hitting the open road. Unfortunately, motorcycle riders face a variety of unique risks every time they jump on their bikes.

On the plus side, there are steps you can take as a motorcycle rider to minimize your risk of being part of an accident.

Although you have no intention of being part of a motorcycle accident, you should always wear the appropriate safety gear. For example, a helmet and riding gloves are an absolute must.

Here are some of the unique risks you will face as a motorcycle rider:

  • Negligent drivers: Most people are courteous when driving in close proximity to motorcyclists, but this doesn't hold true for everyone. There will always be people who drive in a negligent manner, thus increasing the risk of an accident.
  • Road hazards: When driving a traditional automobile, many road hazards never come into play. For example, potholes and debris aren't that big of a deal. However, as a motorcyclist, any type of road hazard has the potential to cause an accident.
  • Riding skills: It's much more difficult to control a motorcycle than an automobile. If you're going to ride, you need to hone your skills to ensure that you're ready to deal with every possible situation.
  • Visual recognition: Motorcycles are smaller than traditional motor vehicles, which makes it more difficult to be seen at all times.
  • Weather conditions: You don't have any protection from Mother Nature. So, when the rain begins to fall and the wind picks up, you need to be extremely careful of how you're driving.

These are just a few of the many risks you face as a motorcycle rider. Being aware of these can help you prevent a situation that results in serious injury or even death.

If you're ever part of a motorcycle accident, you should do two things:

  • Check yourself for injuries
  • Call 911

You want police and an ambulance to quickly arrive at the scene, as there's a good chance you'll require immediate medical attention.

Once you're able to do so, contact your insurance company while also learning more about your legal rights. You may be able to take steps to hold the negligent party, such as another driver, responsible for their actions.
