Pedestrian crashes: Staying safe on the streets

You love to walk, and it's good exercise. The only problem is that you have to walk in a busy area where traffic is prominent. As a pedestrian, one of the things that's important to do is to make sure you understand the rules of the road and what to do if you encounter a dangerous driver. You should always remember that while you might have the right of way in most cases, drivers won't necessarily abide by the laws. It may be up to you to be cautious, so you don't end up putting yourself in a dangerous driver's path.

Those who are distracted or not paying attention to the road could make mistakes that put your life in danger. Fortunately, there are a few tips that can help you avoid a serious pedestrian crash and keep you safer.

1. Always stop and look both ways

The reality is that even when you have a signal to cross the road, drivers won't always stop. It's in your best interest to stop, look both ways and listen for vehicles heading your way. Look for motorcyclists, bicyclists and others before you cross. You never know who might fail to stop.

2. Walk in groups

The next thing to remember is that you should walk in groups. When there are more people with you, you're easier to see. On top of that, you'll have multiple sets of eyes to look out for hazards and identify any around you more easily.

3. Use routes often traveled by pedestrians

Drivers used to seeing pedestrians are more likely to watch out for them, so it's a good idea to use paths often used by other pedestrians. For example, a certain crosswalk in your area might see heavier foot traffic, so drivers get used to seeing people waiting by the roads there. They keep it in mind that people might be up ahead, making it safer for you because the driver already knows to watch out.

These are three things to consider if you're a pedestrian looking to stay safer. By focusing on your own safety and watching for others' errors, you can help prevent a crash caused by another person's negligence.
