3 Southern Californians killed when car drives onto sidewalk

Tragedy struck a Southern California family out for a Sunday evening walk when a man drove his car onto a sidewalk, striking and injuring a woman and killing her three children.

The accident occurred in the unincorporated San Bernardino County community of Bloomington at 8:35 p.m., one recent Sunday. As the four people walked on the sidewalk, and the driver of a speeding Dodge Challenger lost control, wound up on the sidewalk and hit the family.

Killed were two brothers, ages 20 and 17, and their 13-year-old sister. The older brother was a junior at Cal Poly Pomona, studying computer engineering, and his brother wanted to "follow in his footsteps," according to a GoFundMe page set up to assist the family in paying funeral expenses. Their sister would have entered high school this fall.

Their mother, 49, was hospitalized with moderate injuries. Officials declared her children dead at the scene.

The family members were heading toward their home at the time they were hit.

Officials identified the driver as a 19-year-old man and said they don't believe alcohol was involved in the crash. What caused the driver to lose control of his car has not been determined.

The driver remained at the site of the accident and was not arrested, pending investigation. A California Highway Patrol officer said the driver's legal status could change upon review of the results of the investigation.

Sadly, auto-pedestrian accidents happen every day in the United States. It isn't clear what charges the driver might face, but one thing is clear; the survivors of this Southern California family will never be the same. It is comforting to know that the community has contributed to the fund to help this family, but their immediate and ongoing recovery costs will be tremendous.
