Understand the many causes of a motorcycle accident

There is no better feeling than hopping on your motorcycle, hitting the open road and enjoying your ride. It doesn't matter if you're riding for a few minutes or several hours, you're sure to have a smile on your face as motorcycle enthusiasts thrive in the warmer weather common in Manhattan Beach.

Unfortunately, there are times when joy turns to pain as the result of an accident.

While you never want to think about being part of a motorcycle accident, you have to prepare yourself for anything and everything that could go wrong.

To start, make sure you wear the appropriate safety gear at all times. If you don't do this, you're taking a big risk in the event of an accident.

You should also learn more about the most common causes of a motorcycle accident, which include the following:

  • Reckless driving. Even if you're doing everything you should, you can't expect others to always do the same. For example, a driver could partake in multiple forms of reckless driving in close proximity to your motorcycle, such as speeding or changing lanes without notice.
  • A vehicle makes a left turn in front of you. The best way to avoid this is to always keep your head up and focused on the road ahead. But even if you do this, another driver could misjudge your speed and make a left turn in front of your bike.
  • Road defects. From gravel to debris to potholes, any type of road defect can result in a motorcycle accident.
  • A car changes lanes and hits you as a result. If a person doesn't look before making a lane change, his or her vehicle could strike you. This is why it's so important to never drive in a car's blind spot.
  • A car strikes you from behind. This can happen when you're moving or at a stop, but either way it's a dangerous situation that you can't do much to prevent.

Even when you're wearing safety gear, you don't have as much protection as someone in a motor vehicle. This is why a motorcycle accident can be so serious in regard to injuries.

If you're ever part of a motorcycle accident, stay where you are and do your best to get help to the scene right away. If you can't call 911, make sure someone else does so on your behalf.

As you receive medical treatment and discuss your long-term prognosis with your doctors, don't lose sight of your legal rights and the steps you can take to hold the negligent party accountable.
