Stop signs could be a cause of crashes in the United States

Stop signs are an important part of traffic regulation. They are placed at intersections and in dangerous areas, so people know to come to a stop before continuing on. The goal is to give people a chance to stop, look and continue on safely.

Did you know, though, that stop signs may actually be endangering people in the United States? According to a 2016 report, the United States has the worst traffic death figures among the major developed nations. One of the reasons for this could be due to the stop sign.

U.S. signals, road design and signs are a distraction, some believe. Instead of explaining how to move forward safely, they tell you what to do. You are directed away from paying attention to the road while looking for the sign or reading a sign, leading to some avoidable accidents. Experts argue that the stop sign informs you that you shouldn't use your own judgment. Instead, you need to do what the sign says regardless of what the situation calls for. Changing the sign to a yield sign could, in theory, may be safer by allowing the driver to make the decision on what to do next.

If you are struck because a driver does not see a sign or does not abide by what it says, it's important that you know your rights. As a pedestrian, you're at an extremely high risk of serious injuries if you're hit. Any driver who impacts you and your life should be held responsible for the injuries you're suffered.
