It takes a joint effort to keep motorcyclists safe on the roads

Motorcyclists deserve to remain just as safe as everyone else on the roadway. It takes everyone who is driving to pay close attention to safety to make this happen. This is a big undertaking that can't be ignored because the consequences of not following safety guidelines are too serious.

There are many things that motorcyclists and drivers can do to make safety a priority. Here are some points to think about when you are getting ready to get out on the roads.

Follow the established rules of the road

The traffic laws and rules of the road must be followed all the time. These laws, which include demands to comply with speed limits and establishing right of way guidelines, are meant to help keep everyone safe. A whopping two-thirds of accidents that occur between a motorcycle and a car are caused when the driver of the vehicle doesn't give the motorcyclist his or her right of way. The small size of the motorcycle might be the cause of this, at least part of the time. Motorcycles can easily hide in the blind spots of cars, which means that drivers must be especially careful when they know that motorcyclists are likely going to be on the roads.

Intersections pose a serious risk

One specific area of concern where motorcycles might become involved in a crash is intersections. Approximately 70 percent of motorcycle accidents with other vehicles occur at intersections. This is partly due to visual distractions. When you consider fatal motorcycle crashes that involve other vehicles at intersections, 44 percent were due to a car turning left in an intersection when the motorcyclist was driving straight.

Injuries and deaths can occur when safety is ignored

Motorcyclists don't have the protection of a car frame around them to keep them safe and protected. This makes them more likely to suffer from injuries or even death if they are struck while they are out riding. People on a motorcycle are five times more likely to suffer an injury in a crash than a person in another vehicle. They are also 26 times more likely to die. These stark realities highlight the importance of safety.

The motorcyclists who are injured and the family members of those who are killed might opt to take legal action regarding the accident. This is a step toward receiving financial compensation that can help to defray the costs of the accident.
