Speeding only causes more danger for everyone this holiday season

It's a busy time of year, and there's plenty to get done. Don't let that mean that you break the laws when driving, though. Even though there's much to do, if you speed and get into a crash, you'll be more likely to hurt or kill another person

Speed makes a difference in crashes. Even going 5 mph slower could mean the difference between life and death for a pedestrian or passenger. In Los Angeles, the number of people getting hit by cars hasn't increased very much in 2017, but the problem is that the number of deaths has increased by up to 58 percent because of speeding. Speeding combined with other negative tendencies, like texting and driving, poses an even greater risk to those around you.

If you'll be walking around or near the roads, keep a few things in mind to stay safer. For example, you probably know that it's hard to see pedestrians. Using a flashing light or glow stick to stand out can help drivers see you sooner and slow down to avoid hitting you. Don't be afraid to make noise, either; if you see someone heading your way, consider yelling out or using a horn to attract attention.

If you're driving, remember to slow down. People are out walking more during the holidays thanks to many events that take place. Pedestrian activity is higher at stores, and younger pedestrians may not pay attention well to the roads. Do your part, and you can help reduce the risk to these individuals, even if they do end up getting hit.
