Beach-goers may not be safe from vehicle accidents in California

When you're on the beach, the last thing you're likely thinking about is the risk of being in a motor vehicle accident. You may think that there aren't many vehicles on the beach, so you don't have to worry about it. The truth is that accidents do sometimes happen on beaches because of emergency vehicles, four-wheelers, boats or other motor vehicles.

Even though these vehicles often travel slowly and alert people to their presence, it's important to recognize that they might pass you on the beach, and that there can be the potential for accidents. Here are a few times when accidents could happen.

  • When the lifeguard is negligent

If a lifeguard causes an injury as a result of reckless behavior, you may be able to pursue a claim. For example, if the lifeguard is driving to his or her chair when he or she rolls over a person laying on the sand, the victim might be able to bring a negligence claim arguing the lifeguard wasn't watching where he or she was going.

  • When boats get too close

Imagine swimming 30 or 40 feet away from shore. You want to go surfing, and there are buoys to prevent boats from coming too close to the populated beach area. Suddenly, a speed boat comes from behind and hits you in this zone. Negligence by a boater is sometimes behind such incidents. When such accidents occur, the details regarding cause can have legal implications for victims.

  • When emergencies strike

In an emergency, vehicles might enter the beach to drive to an injured person. They should use their lights and sirens to alert others to their positions, so that the pedestrians can move out of the way.

If you're hurt at a beach, know that you aren't alone. These accidents happen and, in their aftermath, it can be important to know what actions you may be able to pursue for holding negligent parties responsible.
