Avoiding an accident at night: Being safe starts with you

Riding a motorcycle at night is daunting thanks in part to the fact that many drivers don't pay attention or recognize when bikers are on the roads. Fortunately, it's possible to ride at night safely.

Although it's dark outside, you can use this to your advantage. By wearing reflective gear, using bright headlights and even revving at nearby drivers, you can be seen and heard better than in the day. It's possible to wear lit riding gear, too, so you stand out even more.

Riding at night is dangerous, but you can avoid crashes with some drivers, like drunk drivers, by knowing when bars let out for the night. Try to avoid populated routes where drunk drivers are likely, and don't ride too late at night. Avoiding busy times of night and locations near clubs, bars and other busy venues can help you ride safer.

If you do need to go into a populated area, be careful to look out for unusual driving behaviors. If you see someone swerving, take an alternative route or slow down to put distance between your vehicles. Keep unpredictable drivers in front of you, so you have time to respond. Try not to pass them, since they could enter your lane and hit you.

Finally, take the time to fully stop at intersections, and if you're approaching one with a green light, look both ways as far as you can. If you see someone approaching quickly, slow down and stop; it's better to inconvenience those behind you than to get hit by a driver who doesn't stop for a red light.
