3 preventable causes of truck crashes

Truck accidents happen suddenly, but many drivers show signs of problems well before an accident takes place. For example, if you've ever driven down the road and noticed the vehicle swaying in and out of the lane, then you've probably already recognized that something is wrong with the vehicle or driver.

Paying attention to the roads is necessary to keep people safe, but many don't do what they need to do to remain attentive. Some people use their cellphones, go without the necessary sleep and ignore traffic laws. Here are a few common reasons why truck drivers crash.

1. Distracted driving

Distracted driving took the lives of 3,477 people in 2015, so it's not something that should be taken lightly. Distracted driving includes eating behind the wheel, texting while driving, changing channels on a radio, talking on a cellphone while taking your hands off the wheel and other actions. Distracted driving has the potential to take your eyes and mind off the road, which leads to crashes.

2. Drowsy driving

Drowsy driving is another issue that some drivers face on the roads. Truck drivers are prone to drowsy driving because they work long hours and may become tired from not getting enough sleep or from avoiding breaks to get where they're going faster. It's important for drivers to sleep at least seven to eight hours a night and to get the rest they need before they get behind the wheel.

3. Dangerous driving

Drowsy and distracted driving are dangerous actions, and so are speeding, racing and weaving in and out of traffic. Truck drivers who break the rules of the road put themselves and others at risk of a crash, so it's important for other drivers to report those who speed or drive dangerously.

These are just three reasons for truck crashes. There are dozens of possible causes, but by limiting these, there could be fewer crashes on the roads.
