Staying safe while motorcycling: 3 tips

You love getting out into the sun on your motorcycle, but you know there are significant safety risks when you do so. How can you keep yourself safe, and how do you protect other riders around you when you're in your passenger vehicle?

There are many ways you can address the risks to motorcyclists. By being safer on the roads as a motorcyclist and passenger vehicle driver, you can reduce the risk to others and yourself. Here are a few tips.

1. Wear the right clothing for the weather

Motorcyclists already know that covering skin is smart. That isn't all you need to think about when picking your motorcycling outfit, though. Take the weather into account, too. If it's going to be hot, consider wearing a vest or jacket with cooling features or breathable materials. Layer your clothing, so you can remove some without having to take off the safest layers.

2. Make yourself obvious

Next, make yourself as obvious as possible. That means adding lights to your motorcycle, revving your engine, waving at motorists or wearing reflective clothing. Do everything you can to stand out, so drivers know you're on the roads.

3. Be aware of your surroundings

Next, be aware of your surroundings. Whether you're in a passenger vehicle or on a motorcycle, you need to make sure you are aware of the people around you. Always look for vehicles that are ready to pull out from side streets. If you're approaching an intersection, slow down and look both ways, even if you have a green light. Always be aware of your surroundings, so you can take evasive actions to avoid a collision.

These are a few tips for staying safe on the roads. It's up to drivers and motorcyclists alike to keep each other safe, so stay focused and enjoy the ride.
