Here's what you should do if you're sharing the road with trucks

If you're going out on the roads, one thing you'll need to do is share the roads with larger trucks. These vehicles can be daunting and may make you feel you have to be on high alert, but with the right information, you can stay safe.

When you're around a big rig, you need to follow a few safety tips. For example, if you can't see the driver's mirrors, it's highly likely the driver can't see you. Trailers are very long, making it hard for the driver to see anyone to the rear or along the sides.

Since the driver doesn't see others well, don't take chances. If you think the truck is going to move into your lane, don't speed up to get out of the way. If you do and then have to put your brakes on, the truck driver may not be able to stop. Instead, slow down and allow the truck to merge over.

If you do plan to pass the driver, take extra time to make sure the pass is safe. Give the truck driver as much space as you can. It's a good idea to wait until you can see the truck in your rearview mirror before you pull into the next lane, since this means you have a good distance between your vehicles.

Driving alongside a truck can be scary to drivers, but by keeping the above tips in mind and obeying the traffic laws, you can be safe. If you are struck by a driver who is negligent or who doesn't see you, then you may be in a position to file a claim.
