What are some tips for a first time motorcycle rider?

Buying a motorcycle is an exhilarating experience, especially when it's your first bike. If you've never ridden on a motorcycle before, you will want to make sure you know all about it before leaving the dealership with it. Do plenty of research prior to buying and do your best to operate a bike of someone you know to get a feel for it. Here are some tips for a first time motorcycle rider.

The first time you ride the motorcycle, if it is when you leave the dealership with the bike, you should plan your route ahead of time. Try to take the smoothest roads and even plan out which lanes you will use. All of this can be done prior to arrival by using any internet map software. Keep the route as simple as possible and only take roads you are familiar with in the area.

Leaving the dealership for the first time on a motorcycle should be planned ahead of time too. This includes not leaving during the height of rush hour. No one wants to get stuck in traffic and this is especially true when you are trying to take your motorcycle home for the first time as a new rider.

Give the motorcycle a once over to familiarize yourself with all of the controls. Even though you will only be traveling a couple of miles to your house, you never know what controls you might require during your maiden voyage. Every single control is important and could play a role in your safety. Get to know them before leaving the dealership.

You shouldn't have to check the fuel gauge prior to leaving the dealership, but it's not a bad idea. If it needs gas, try to have the dealer fill the tank for you prior to your first ride.
