Alleged drunk driver pleads not guilty to murder charges

Imagine losing the people you love when a driver decides to risk driving while under the influence. You'd be horrified, but you'd also be extremely angry if you later found out that the individual had been arrested for drunk driving several times before. That's what happened in this case that is still pending trial. A motorist has pleaded not guilty two counts of murder that he faces as a result of a crash he allegedly caused while under the influence of alcohol. A July 24 news article states that the 34-year-old man was driving east on Taft Highway when his 2006 GMC Sierra crossed the center lane and hit a Ford Focus with two women inside. The crash happened at approximately 4:30 p.m. An investigator that came to the scene stated that the man smelled like he had been drinking and was showing signs of being intoxicated. He allegedly had slurred speech, trouble maintaining his balance and red, watery eyes. When he was asked if he had been drinking, he did not give a comment except to make a reference to the fact that he had made an error. The two victims included a 50-year-old woman and her daughter, 19. A friend of the victim said she did not understand why the man had not been in jail prior to this accident. He had three previous drunk-driving convictions. If he is convicted in this case, he faces life in prison.
