A hundred and fifty years ago, no pedestrian had to worry about getting hit by an automobile, and bicycles were so rare that injuries associated with them were exceedingly uncommon. The worst you had to worry about was getting hit by a horse and carriage, a train or another pedestrian -- collisions that were easy enough to avoid for the average person on foot.
In the modern world, however, pedestrians are at a severe disadvantage. There are cars, semitrucks, motorcyclists, bicyclists, skateboarders, Segway riders and more that people on foot have to watch out for. To make matters worse, a lot of the operators of these high-speed, wheeled contraptions are distracted by their smartphones, not even paying attention to the road in front of them.
At Sullivan & Sullivan, it's our mission to bring more attention to pedestrian safety. We want Los Angeles motorists -- and everyone else on the road -- to keep a sharp eye out for those most vulnerable to getting hurt and killed in a collision: pedestrians. It's our hope that every pedestrian accident case we bring forward in court attracts more attention to this vital public safety issue. When an injured pedestrian asserts his or her legal rights in court by holding a negligent motorist responsible for financial damages, the pedestrian will be helping other pedestrians throughout the state. The more focus we bring to pedestrian accident safety as a community, the more lawmakers will severely punish negligent and inattentive motorists. Also, the motorists themselves will be more likely to driver attentively and follow the law.
