Drowsy driving is a life-threatening action

When you get behind the wheel without enough sleep, you may not think much of it. You probably think you'll get the things you need to get done over with before returning home to sleep.

The problem with that is that drowsy driving is actually just as dangerous as drunk driving. It has the potential to cause serious collisions, to cause injuries and potentially to cause death.

Driving when you're tired makes you react similarly to when you're drunk. You may have a slow reaction time. You may start to fall asleep and weave in or out of traffic or go off the road. You may even make a poor decision that causes an accident.

Statistics show that tired drivers are involved in approximately one-fifth of all fatal accidents. Shockingly, around 1 in 25 people are estimated to have fallen asleep behind the wheel in the last month. In California specifically, there has been a rise in the number of people driving while drowsy. These drivers ended up in over 5,500 crashes in 2015, up from 4,693 in 2014.

You can avoid driving while drowsy by remembering that you need to get enough sleep. If you start to have trouble keeping your eyes open, take a break. It's more important to get rest than to get somewhere quickly. If you don't, you could fall asleep behind the wheel and cause a crash.

Many people do get behind the wheel drunk, and they are responsible for many serious accidents. If you are impacted by a dangerous driver, you have a right to pursue compensation.
