Preventing underage drunk driving on prom night

It's prom night and your son is dressed to the nines. He got the tux with the tails just to be different, and you know that he's ready to party. You're terrified that he might get his hands on some alcohol and do something he'll later regret -- like drinking with driving.

An underage drinking and driving offense is serious, and it can land your teen in trouble with the law. However, the thing that you should be most worried about is the danger of your underage drinking teen getting into an injurious or fatal car crash. Such an incident could result in a jail sentence, destroyed lives due to injury or death, and the potential for you and your family being financially liable for your child's actions.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind to help keep your son or daughter safe from alcohol this prom season:

-- You might be the source of the alcohol. Over half of underage drinkers say that they get their alcohol from either their parents or the parents of their friends.

-- Have you talked to your teen about underage drinking? Almost three-quarters of parents say they've had a talk about drinking with their teens within the last month. Approximately a quarter of teens say they have never talked to their parents about alcohol.

-- Have you talked specifically about drinking and prom night? Regardless of whether you have done so recently, or not, you might want to have a talk with him or her specifically regarding prom night.

Now matter how safe and law-abiding your teen happens to be, he or she can still be in danger of getting hurt on prom night by other teens who might be drinking and driving or any drunk driver on any night. If your teen was hurt due to the negligence or unlawful activity of another, you may have a claim for financial damages against that driver.
