How do I stay safe while jogging along a road?

Exercising is a way of life for many people in California, and one of the most popular forms is jogging. But jogging can be dangerous depending on where and when you choose to run. Here are some tips for staying safe while jogging in Manhattan Beach.

-- Make yourself as visible as possible, even if you are running during daylight hours. Remember, there's no downside to being visible.

-- Invest in some reflective apparel. Most reflective clothing comes in either orange or yellow and has reflective writing or striping on the items. Other good choices include blinking lights worn on the head and/or around the waist.

-- Jog facing traffic, which is against the flow. This enables you to keep tabs on approaching traffic, especially at intersections. It prevents joggers from having to turn around at each intersection to see what the cars are going to do. Running against traffic also makes you more visible to drivers.

-- Run with a partner as often as possible. When you run with a buddy, this person can call for help should something happen to you, such as being struck by a hit-and-run driver. If you have no one to run with, tell a family member or roommate you are headed out for a jog, as well as your intended route.

-- If at all possible, run during the day. Unless you absolutely have to run at night, don't. You are more visible during the day, even when it's overcast. Running during the day also reduces your risk of tripping over something you might not have seen at nighttime.

Jogging can be dangerous for those who don't know how to keep themselves safe. However, even the safest joggers can become victims of auto-pedestrian accidents. An experienced personal injury attorney in Manhattan Beach can answer all of your questions surrounding such an accident.
