Dangerous road debris a serious problem in the United States

A traffic accident has the potential to change your life instantly. Sometimes, these accidents aren't a result of a driver's negligence but instead a result of problems with the person's vehicle. For example, if a person just had his or her tires changed and the company did not install them correctly, the tire could come off and hit other vehicles.

In a news article out of Newhall, it was reported that a tire came off a vehicle on the 14 Freeway. That resulted in another vehicle being impacted by the tire. The tire entered the vehicle's windshield and caused an accident that caused the driver his or her life.

This is not the first time there have been problems on this freeway. In another case, dangerous road debris nearly caused an accident when it fell from the back of another vehicle. You may think this is relatively uncommon, but it's not.

A study from the American Automobile Association (AAA), stated that road debris caused over 200,000 collisions over the course of three years. Those accidents resulted in over 39,000 injuries and 500 deaths across the United States.

What causes the collisions? While the AAA study showed that the obstacles were a problem, it was actually the people swerving to avoid the obstacle that were more likely to be hurt. As they swerved to avoid the debris, they could go out of their lanes or impact others.

It may be impossible to prevent all road debris, but you can stay safer by staying back several car lengths from the vehicles in front of you. Make sure you have time to slow down and stop if anything falls in front of your vehicle. If you are impacted as a result of dangerous debris falling from another vehicle, you may have a personal injury case that your attorney can help you file.
