California motorcyclists: Crashes and safety

It's somewhat recognized that riding a motorcycle has the potential to be more dangerous than riding in a passenger vehicle or truck. You're exposed on more sides and have no protection in the case of a collision.

Since California has beautiful weather most of the year, there are many more people who choose to ride. Interestingly, despite that, California does not have the most dangerous roadways for motorcyclists. The state has actually seen a decline in motorcycle fatalities as of 2016.

Across the United States, motorcycle crashes have increased by approximately 10 percent, but in California, that number has dropped by seven percent. Why? What has the state done that is making such a difference for riders?

Part of the reason riders are suffering fewer injuries and fatalities is thanks to the introduction of the anti-lock brake system on motorcycles. Another is because helmet laws have made sure up to 100 percent of riders have their heads protected, preventing severe head injuries in a collision.

Sometimes, reductions in the number of injuries and fatalities can also be tied to weather. When there are rainy or windy days, snowy seasons or other hazardous conditions, fewer people head out on their motorcycles.

What can you do to prevent a motorcyclist fatality?

One of the most important things you can do is to wear your helmet when you ride. It reduces the risk of a fatal crash by around 37 percent.

Another thing you can do is to be aware of your surroundings. Drive defensively. It's vital to look out for drivers who may pull out in front of you or pull into your lane because they do not see you.

Always pay attention to the road. Never use a smartphone while you ride, and if you need to make a call, pull over. Don't drive when you're tired, and make sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially on hot summer days.

If you are struck by a driver who was negligent, your attorney can help you pursue a claim. With the injuries you have suffered, it's important to get compensation to cover your losses.
