Drive the Pacific Coast Highway safely with some precautions

Heading out on the Pacific Coast Highway may be a dream of yours, especially if you love traveling. It's a route motorcyclists love for its scenery. California State Route 1, its formal name, is the eighth most popular tourist road for travelers.

Taking a long trip can put you at risk of injury, so it's important to be prepared. Not preparing ahead of time could lead to you running out of gas or being stuck in a location without food or water.

Here's an example. There is a long section between Cambria and Carmel where there are few gas stations. It's wiser for riders to fill up before hitting that part of the road, because even if you do find a gas station, they have short hours and may not even have gas.

Another thing that impacts riders along this road is fog. Fog looks beautiful, but it puts motorcyclists and other drivers at risk of being involved in an accident. Fog reduces visibility significantly, which makes it more likely for drivers to go off the road or into oncoming traffic. If you check the weather and notice a fog advisory or bad weather, stay off the roads. If fog is the only deterrent, wait for a few hours, so it dissipates before you hit the road.

Another potential hazard is a pullout. There are a number of places where you can stop to admire the scenery, but these unpaved areas have the potential to cause harm. Your motorcycle could slide on the gravel, dirt or dust from these pullouts, so keep that in mind as you approach.

As always, if you're injured because someone cuts you off or impacts you, it's your right to seek out a claim against that driver. With the right help, you can get the compensation you need as you recover from your injuries.
