Why are truck accidents so dangerous in California?

Traffic congestion in California is not only common, it's to be expected by almost every motorist in the state. Because of the congestion, accidents happen quite frequently, with a lot of them involving trucks of all sizes and loads. But, what is it about truck accidents that make them so dangerous in California?

The United States Department of Transportation released statistics for 2006 that showed truck accidents were responsible for 4,995 deaths that year as well as 106,000 injuries. These numbers are lower than automobile-involved or caused accidents, but still very alarming.

The load a truck is carrying during an accident can determine the severity of the accident. For example, a truck carrying foam or a water tanker will not cause a lot of secondary damage if the load spills. But, a truck carrying hazardous or flammable materials could cause a tragic accident.

Truck loads are dangerous in another way and it all comes down to how they are balanced. If a truck's load is improperly balanced, the load could move or sway during transport, causing the truck to overturn onto other vehicles around it. This can be very deadly for all involved.

One of the most common types of truck accidents in California are those caused by the blind spots of the truck. There are certain areas of a truck where if a vehicle is in those areas, the truck driver will not be able to see the vehicle. Those areas are the sides and the rear.

Speed is another major factor in the severity of truck accidents. This includes both the speed of the truck involved and the speed of any other vehicles involved in the accident. Large trucks cannot stop their vehicles on a dime and can roll their truck if it has to swerve out of the way of other vehicles.

The best way to avoid truck accidents in Manhattan Beach, California is by keeping plenty of distance between your vehicle and trucks.
