16-year-old baseball player killed in a tragic auto collision

Hundreds of high school baseball players -- both current and former team members -- gathered to remember the life of a 16-year-old shortstop from South High School. The teenager died in a car accident last week, after two vehicles fleeing a previous accident ran through a red light.

The boy was riding in a van driven by his father in Torrance when the collision occurred. They were heading back home after eating dinner at the teenager's grandmother's house not far away. The father survived the crash, but not without suffering serious injuries. As of last reports, the father was in intensive care at the hospital.

The fleeing drivers that struck the father and son included a 21-yer-old man operating a Mercedes Benz and another driver operating an Audi. The 21-year-old driver stopped, and police arrested and booked him on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter. He has since secured his release after posting $50,000 bail. Authorities failed to immediately locate the Audi driver, who fled the scene on foot after abandoning his Audi.

California family members may never recover emotionally from the unexpected loss of a loved one in a car accident. However, they can seek some level of closure through the pursuit of a wrongful death claim to hold the responsible party liable in civil court. Such a claim, if successfully navigated, could bring family members money to pay for end of life expenses related to funeral and memorial services. A wrongful death claim might also bring compensation for loss of companionship and other emotional hardships.
