A pregnant, 23-year-old mother lost her unborn baby and husband in a tragic drunk driving accident earlier this month. The woman, who was seven months pregnant, was riding as a passenger in a Honda Accord while her husband was driving. Her mother was also riding in the vehicle.
The collision happened during the early morning hours at approximately 1:45 a.m. A 56-year-old intoxicated man drove his Hyundai sedan straight through a stop sign. He broadsided the family, colliding into the driver's side door.
Emergency responders rushed the husband to the hospital for treatment, but he later succumbed to his injuries. The pregnant mother was also rushed to the hospital with significant injuries. Unfortunately, her unborn baby daughter did not survive. The 42-year-old mother of the young woman received treatment for major injuries at the hospital and was fortunate to survive.
According to police, the DUI driver suffered only minor injuries and was soon released from the hospital. He has since been charged with driving under the influence causing significant bodily harm and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. Authorities further noted that the man has two previous DUI convictions on his criminal record.
The young mother -- who lost her husband and unborn baby -- has been left devastated by this horrific turn of events. What happened to her is truly unfair. It was also unlawful.
Individuals harmed by drunk drivers in California -- and family members of those killed by drunk drivers -- can seek financial restitution in court from the unlawful drivers who hurt them. This legal process can benefit the plaintiffs financially by bringing them money to pay for medical care and/or financial losses resulting from their loved one's death. It can also help plaintiffs emotionally by bringing them a sense of justice and closure.
