Is driving after using marijuana dangerous?

On Behalf of | Feb 17, 2017 | Uncategorized |

Now, there are laws against driving while under the influence of drugs, so you may already assume driving after smoking marijuana is dangerous if you’re approaching it from that perspective. However, if you do, one report shows that you’re in the minority.

For the report, people were asked if drivers who are under the influence of marijuana were an issue, and a full 70 percent said they didn’t think it was a very big problem. A number of people said it was somewhat serious, but they remained unconcerned by it overall.

Only 29 percent were very concerned, calling it a serious problem.

What’s interesting is that views on driving under the influence of alcohol are very different. The majority — 79 percent, so the majority by a long shot — thought that drivers who had been drinking were a serious issue.

Some studies have shown that those who are under the influence of marijuana may at least pose a smaller risk. For example, the odds that a driver would swerve within his or her own lane went up after marijuana use, according to Drug and Alcohol Dependence, a journal that studies these issues. They found no evidence that marijuana increased the risk of speeding or swerving out of the lane, however. With drunk drivers, the odds of all three behaviors increased.

Still, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal, and experts do note that it’s best to be 100 percent sober when driving. Since those citizens who were polled don’t always have the same concern, that means impaired drivers are still a threat to others on the highways in California, and it’s important for those who are hurt in accidents that they cause to know how to seek compensation.
