Ex-football player sues CA entities for accident injuries

In 2012, a well-known former UCLA football player was in a motorcycle accident that cost him a part of his left leg. The victim went on to file a negligence lawsuit against the California Department of Transportation.

The lawsuit alleges that Caltrans was aware of an ongoing traffic problem at the scene of the accident but did nothing to correct it. Last week, the ex-player asked a California court for $50 million dollars in reparations.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Diamond Street in the Redondo Beach area. According to the victim's lawyer, Diamond Street crosses the PCH at an extremely severe diagonal. He asserts that the intersection requires Caltrans to implement extra precautions in order to ensure the safety of motorists. Two of these suggested precautions include a left turn signal and additional roadway markings.

The state countered these allegations by pointing out that the driver of the van that collided with the victim's motorcycle caused the accident and the injuries. Reportedly, the van driver did not yield the right-of-way while making a left turn onto Diamond Street. As a result, he collided with the motorcycle.

Update: On Monday, Jan. 9, following a six-week trial, the jury ordered Caltrans to pay the victim $35 million.

Hopefully, the positive outcome of this case will encourage more car or motorcycle victims to seek justice when negligence is a factor. Anytime an individual or organization causes a motorist to suffer life-changing injuries, it is possible to receive compensation. Doing so can help victims get the medical care they need to recover from their injuries.
